Happy Earth Day
With the increased energy demand around the world, it’s now more important than ever to “invest in our planet”.
What is Earth Day about?
Earth Day is an annual event that falls on April 22nd this year. It is celebrated by millions of people around the world to honour our planet and raise awareness about environmental issues. Each year there is a specific theme and a series of activities are co-ordinated by the Earth Day Network (EDN) in support of the global event.
What is this year’s theme?
The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet” – a call for businesses, governments and individuals to take concrete steps toward more sustainable practices and have a more active role in the wellbeing of the planet. It marks the event’s 52nd anniversary.
What is the history of Earth Day?
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 as a ‘national teach-in on the environment’ when United States senator Gaylord Nelson organised a national demonstration to raise awareness about clean air and water following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The event garnered the support of 20 million protestors.
In 1990, Earth Day became a global event, mobilizing 200 million people to encourage environmental protection and become more serious about recycling. Now, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities.
Earth Day led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency which is still in existence today, where some of our most important environmental laws have passed.
Why is it important to celebrate?
Despite 52 years of advocating change on environmental issues, average global temperatures continue to rise and the race to curb climate change becomes more critical.
Earth Day gives us all the opportunity to reflect, raise awareness and act on the serious challenges Earth faces. It also reminds us that we can protect the Earth in our everyday lives too.
Invest in our planet
There are many ways you can get involved at home this year, such as: donating to environmental charities, planting a herb garden, and educating yourself on recycling. You can also make long-term commitments by choosing to invest sustainably and working toward zero-waste.
We believe that everyday should be Earth Day; It’s important that we act throughout the year. There is no longer a choice between going green and generating long-term profits – the two go hand in hand.
At Control Energy Costs, our journey to net zero is our commitment to a more sustainable future.
